Solution Heat Treatment

Solution heat treatment is a commonly applied technique or process used to impart the desired set of properties to a material. It is a critical treatment process employed prior to very important activities such as machining and welding, both of which would be adversely affected by the presence of impurities such as an oxide on the surface of the material.

Basically, the solution heat treatment process involves heating the material up to a point that is suitably high enough to completely dissolve all of the impurities and contaminants within it and to homogenize the microstructure to one that is intensely fine-grained. The material is held at the temperature required for a specific time period known as the soaking time.

Once the material reaches an optimum temperature, it is cooled generally at a slow rate to a suitable temperature. The cooling process is referred to as “quenching” and is designed to keep the material in its solutionized condition. The material is also held within a suitable environment, for example an inert gas atmosphere, in order to make sure it does not cool too rapidly. Inaccurate cooling rates can create an inhomogeneous microstructure, unrequired thermal stresses, or even the formation of a brittle intermetallic phase.

The solution heat treatment process is applied in the field of materials science and engineering, specifically to certain classes of materials such as ferrous alloys, titanium alloys and aluminium alloys.

Ferrous alloys are steels, cast irons and stainless steels. It is applied to these classes of alloy in order to:

• Increase their toughness

• Re-align their dislocation structures

• Harden these materials

• Reduce their stress levels

• Change their mechanical properties

• Develop their corrosion resistance

This is done by heating the material until it is completely molten and then quenching the molten material rapidly. By this process, the material is brought to a far-higher degree of embrittlement as compared to having been simply heated to a suitable temperature. As a result, it undergoes a rapid cooling which causes the desired effect and changes the mechanical properties of the material.

Solution heat treatment is also employed for specific alloys, such as titanium alloys, which rely a great deal on the presence of ductility. The ductility is needed so that the material can be worked into a desired shape or product. In order for the titanium alloys to have the desired properties, they are often solution-treated. This allows for the material to be more readily formed into a desired product as it ensures that the ductile state is maintained.

Finally, there is the application of solution heat treatment to aluminium alloys. Aluminium alloys are popular in the creation of items such as aircraft and automobiles due to their light weight and durable nature. To ensure that the material maintains its desired physical properties, material can be treated through solution heat treatment. By solutionizing or softening the material , it is possible to create sound, lightweight and durable parts which are both corrosion and wear resistant.

Solution heat treatment is an important step in creating and maintaining the desired properties for a variety of material types; it provides an effective and reliable method of homogenizing properties, improving ductility and inducing desired physical properties. In doing so, it provides all engineers with an invaluable tool to create the safest and most efficient designs.

Heat treatment is a process used to alter the physical or chemical properties of a material. One such heat treatment is known as “solution treatment”, otherwise known as “solubilization”. Solution treatment is a process used to homogenize or equilibrate the distribution of alloying elements within the material.

During the solution treatment, the material is heated to an elevated temperature and held until all of the solid phases are dissolved, thus forming a single-phase solution with the dispersed alloying elements. The temperature of the solution depends on the specific alloy being treated, but is typically between 800 and 1200°C (72 and 1472°F). The material is then quenched rapidly in water or oil, which abruptly suppresses the precipitation of the solid phases, remaining in a supersaturated state.

Solution treatment can be beneficial due to the homogenization of the alloying elements, which can improve microstructural uniformity and enhance formability. The process can be utilized for both ferrous and nonferrous alloys, but is most common for aluminum alloys.

The main disadvantage of solution treatment is the deterioration of mechanical properties. The rapid cooling of the material can cause the dissolution of the solid phases to be incomplete, resulting in segregation of the alloying elements after being quenched. The material can also be quite brittle during cooling, not to mention oxidation that can occur during high temperature treatments.

While there are a few drawbacks to solution treatment, the process yields numerous benefits such as improved machinability, improved uniformity and grain refinement, minimization of entrainment after welding and heat dispensation, improved fatigue strength, and improved strength and ductility.
