It contains 23.0-25.0% chromium, 12.0-15.0% nickel, 2.0-2.5% manganese, 1.5-2.0% silicon and 0.1-0.2% carbon. While it is resistant to general corrosion, it exhibits poor performance against crevice and pitting corrosion in both chloride and sulfuric acid environments. This austenitic stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance along with good formability and toughness.

Alloy 309/309S exhibits greater impact and vibration fatigue resistance than Alloy 304/304L, making it suitable for use in a wider range of applications.
