AUS NM500 (also known as Nitronic50) is an austenitic stainless steel with a high chromium and nickel content. It is known for its high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, as well as its good weldability, toughness and impact toughness. This material is widely used in oil and gas refining, petrochemical, manufacturing and other industries requiring high levels of resistance to corrosion and other elements.

AUS NM500 has an outstanding combination of mechanical properties, making it well suited to a wide range of uses. Its high tensile strength, yield strength, and good creep resistivity give it very good mechanical durability. The material is highly resistant to a wide range of temperatures, including temperatures in excess of 1473°C (2700°F). It also has a very good corrosion resistance to inorganic acids (including nitric acid), organic acids, and organic acids in combination with chlorides.

AUS NM500 has been designed to be suitable for highly corrosive environments. Its good corrosion resistance even at elevated temperatures makes it suitable for cryogenic applications. Good weldability and weld strength are ensured by its suitable composition. It can be welded without pre- or post-weld heat treatment and welding with Inconel 625 or Incoloy 825 filler material is possible.

The common chemical composition of AUS NM500 includes chromium (15-18%), nickel (12-15%), manganese (4-5%), molybdenum (2.5-3.5%), nitrogen (0.2-0.8%), and carbon (0.04%). The material has a density of 8.06 g/cm3 and a melting point of 1435°C (2615°F). It also has a low thermal expansion coefficient of 8.8 m/m/°C. The tensile strength of the material is 1150-1360 MPa, the yield strength is 725-885 MPa and the elongation at break is 15-17 %. Finally, the impact energy is 63 J at -196°C (-320°F) and 73 J at a temperature of -150°C (-238°F).

AUS NM500 can be machined with conventional machining operations as well as with cutting tool composites. It can also be cold worked with minimal hammering and rolling, with better performance in non thermal-mechanical processes. The material can be annealed after welding and before forming to increase its fatigue strength. It can be annealed under vacuum, inert or protective gas with a wide temperature range between 677°C - 1010°C (1250°F - 1850°F).
