Physical Properties of AISI201 1Cr17Ni5Mn6N Austenitic Stainless Steel
AISI 201 (1Cr17Ni5Mn6N) stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel, originally developed as a substitute for 304 steel. This grade offers high strength and good weldability. AISI 201 is an economical grade that offers good strength and formability with excellent corrosion resistance. When compared to AISI 304 steel, this grade provides a significantly better resistance to corrosive media.
Physical Properties:
AISI 201 stainless steel has a number of distinct physical properties. These differences in properties make the two grades to be suitable for a variety of applications.
•Density: AISI 201 stainless steel has a density of 8.1 g/cm3.
•Thermal conductivity: AISI 201 stainless steel has a thermal conductivity of 101 W/mK.
•Elastic Modulus: AISI 201 stainless steel has an elastic modulus of 193 GPa.
•Tensile Strength: AISI 201 stainless steel has a tensile strength of 1250 MPa (183 ksi).
•Yield Strength: AISI 201 stainless steel has a yield strength of 775 MPa (112 ksi).

•Hardness: AISI 201 stainless steel has a hardness of 194 HBW.
•Brinell hardness: AISI 201 stainless steel has a Brinell hardness of 193 HBW.
Chemical Composition:
The chemical composition of AISI 201 stainless steel is listed in the following table.
•Carbon: 0.12%
•Manganese: 0.6-1.4%
•Silicon: 0.2-0.5%
•Phosphorus: 0.06%
•Sulfur: 0.02%
•Chromium: 16-18%
•Nickel: 5-7%
•Molybdenum: 0.5 – 2%
•Nitrogen: 0.11 %
Corrosion Resistance:
The high chromium and nickel content of AISI 201 stainless steel gives it excellent corrosion resistance. This grade of steel is especially resistant to corrosion environments such as acidic and neutral aqueous solutions and atmospheres. It is also resistant to corrosion in a variety of organic solutions.
Weldability:
AISI 201 stainless steel is highly weldable. For welding this grade of steel, an E2209 electrode is typically used. The welding process should be performed in a shielded atmosphere, preferably using argon gas. When welding with solid state welding machines, a welding speed of 1.6-2.5m/min is suitable.
Machinability:
AISI 201 stainless steel is relatively easy to machine. This grade of steel is generally machined with high-speed steel cutters. It is also possible to machine this steel with carbide tools. The material should be machined with speeds of about 0.5m/min and feeds of about 0.15mm/rev.
Applications:
Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and strength, AISI 201 stainless steel is ideal for a variety of applications. It is used for components in chemical plants, manufacturing of food processing equipment, hospital and medical instruments, decorative trim and casework, as well as for pipeline systems and circuit boards. It is also used in construction applications, especially when creating bridges and other structural elements.
