Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China are playing an increasingly important role in the economy of the country. In 2017, the contribution of SMEs to sales revenue, taxation and employment accounted for more than 60% of the national total. The Chinese government has raised the social development level of SMEs in order to promote their innovations and improve their competitiveness.

To facilitate the development of SMEs, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China has established the Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Bureau, which provides financial and non-financial supports to enable SMEs to operate efficiently and develop sustainably.

The Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Bureau is responsible for formulating relevant laws, regulations and policies concerning SMEs, and monitoring their implementation.
