Mechanical Properties of S44094 11Cr17 Martensitic Stainless Steel

Introduction

Stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium and is known for its corrosion resistance and strength. Martensitic stainless steel is a type of stainless steel that has a high hardenability, allowing it to be easily hardened and strengthened through heat treatment. S44094 11Cr17 is a commonly used high hardness martensitic stainless steel grade. In this report, the mechanical properties of S44094 11Cr17 martensitic stainless steel are discussed in detail.

Chemical composition

Table 1 illustrates the chemical composition of S44094 11Cr17 martensitic stainless steel.

Martensitic Type S44094 11Cr17 stainless steel is a high chromium corrosion-resistant stainless steel produced by American steelmaker Carpenter. It is also known as US AISI 440A. This stainless steel has good corrosion resistance in various corrosive environments, good heat resistance and good hardenability. It is mainly used to produce components in the medical and food industries which require higher corrosion resistance and wear resistance than other types of stainless steel.

The chemical composition of Martensitic Type S44094 11Cr17 stainless steel is as follows:

C: 0.12, Si: 0.60, Mn: 0.30, P: 0.040, S: 0.030, Cr: 14.50–16.00, Ni: 0.25, Mo: 0.04, N: 0.10, Cu: 0.25.

Martensitic Type S44094 11Cr17 stainless steel is easy to be machined or welded and has good forming and mechanical properties. The tensile strength of the material in the annealed state is 557 MPa and the yield strength is 350 MPa. The elongation at break is 20%. The hardness of this steel ranges from 151 to 229 HBW and the impact toughness is not inferior to that of other stainless steels of the same thickness. This steel also shows excellent resistivity against corrosion in general and stress corrosion cracking.

Martensitic Type S44094 11Cr17 stainless steel can be hardened by heat-treatment and can be magnetic. It has good wear resistance as it contains large amounts of chromium. It can also be used in high temperature environments and should be considered whenever high demand in corrosion and wear resistance is required.
