Introduction

Austenitic stainless steel S31753 is a very high alloy, austenitic stainless steel that has been developed for use in highly corrosive environments. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is intended for use in applications where resistance to extreme temperatures, chloride stress or other aggressive media is required.

Typical Applications

S31753 stainless steel is used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, primarily in highly corrosive process environments such as chemical processing, oil and gas production, petrochemicals, power plants, food and beverage processing and waste water treatment. Key industries that rely on the properties of S31753 are the pulp and paper industry, medical and pharmaceutical, aerospace, and the transport industry.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of S31753 stainless steel is listed in Table 1.

Heat Treatment

S31753 stainless steel has a different range of heat treatment requirements than other austenitic stainless steels due to its high alloy content and relatively low temperature of hardening. The material is not as hardenable by heat treatment as some other austenitic alloys and should be annealed at temperatures below 850 °F (454 °C) to obtain desired properties.

Welding

S31753 stainless steel can be welded with all of the common welding processes such as oxyacetylene, MIG and TIG. It should be preheated prior to welding and the fillers used should be matched to the composition of the alloy. Post-weld heat treatment may be required to obtain the desired properties.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

S31753 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance due to its high chromium and nickel content. It also has a high molybdenum content which provides it with excellent corrosion resistance to sulphates, chlorides, and other industrial chemicals. It is particularly resistant to stress corrosion cracking in chloride rich environments.

CONCLUSION

S31753 stainless steel is a highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel developed for use in highly corrosive environments. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. The mechanical and heat treatment properties of the alloy are important when considering its use and application. S31753 is well suited to welding processes, however preheating and post-weld heat treatments may be required. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is particularly resistant to stress corrosion cracking in chloride rich environments.

AISI 317L is an austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon content of 0.03%. It contains 17-19% Chromium,12-15% Nickel,3-4% molybdenum and traces of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. It also has a high tensile strength of 700 N/mm², making it an ideal choice for high strength applications.

AISI 317L is a non-magnetic stainless steel, with excellent ductility and high resistance to oxidation and pitting. It has a high creep rupture strength, making it suitable for applications operating up to 1350°C. This stainless steel can be machined, welded, cold rolled, heat treated and work hardened without the risk of cracking or de-embrittlement.

AISI 317L is often used in the petrochemical, food processing, pharmaceutical and marine industries for its increasing corrosion resistance. It is also used for replacing acid-resistant 300 series and 400 series ferritic stainless steels in secondary cooling pipe lines of petrochemical plants.

AISI 317L has good formability and weldability, making it suitable for applications like process equipment and tanks in the chemical, petrochemical, sea, food and beverage and paper industries. Its non-magnetic properties make it ideal for use in instrumentation and control equipment.

AISI 317L can be heat treated to attain desired level of mechanical properties, depending on the application requirements. The tensile strength and yield strength of AISI 317L can be increased to match the proper application requirements. It can also be harden able to attain higher hardness values through proper heat treatment.

AISI 317L has very good corrosion resistance against a wide range of environments, making it suitable for use in highly corrosive environments, such as water tanks and process vessels. In addition, it has excellent weldability, making it suitable for welding without the need for special pre-weld or post-weld heat treatments.
