00Cr18Mo2 Stainless Steel
00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel with a higher chromium content than 02Cr18Mo2 and 04Cr18Mo2. It is mainly used for advanced chemical petrochemical industry, the chemical and fertilizer industry, water treatment facilities and other highly corrosive environments and is often used as a material for high-pressure liquid, process pumps and equipment parts.
Chemical Composition
The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel is composed of an iron-based solution, which is mainly composed of around 0.08% carbon, 17.00-19.00% chromium and 2.00-2.50% molybdenum. Other elements such as silicon, manganese, and nickel may vary across commercial grades. 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel is also known as “00Cr18Mo2” because of its higher chromium content compared to other stainless steels.
Mechanical Properties
The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel has good ductility and workability, especially when hot-formed. This stainless steel can be hardened by cold working, but not by heat treatment. It also possesses good creep, stress rupture and oxidation resistance up to 870°C.
Corrosion Resistance
The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments including alkaline, neutral, acidic and organic solvents, but it is not suitable for use in environments containing halides such chloride or sulfate, or where hydrochloric acid is present in high concentrations. The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel is therefore suitable for use in applications such as oil refineries, fertilizer production and water treatment.
Weldability
The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel is good to weld, but not so easy to weld as the austenitic grades. Because of its low thermal expansion coefficient, the 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel can be welded in all positions. It should be noted, however, that this stainless steel is not suitable for welding of products operating under very severe conditions, such as nuclear reactors and submerged pipes, due to its higher content of chromium and molybdenum.
Conclusion
The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel is a commonly used ferritic stainless steel which features a high chromium content and good mechanical properties. It typically exhibits good ductility and workability, and corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. The 00Cr18Mo2 stainless steel can be welded in all positions, but is not suitable for welding applications operating under very severe conditions.
