S45000 (Custom 450) stainless steel is a highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel designed for harsh and highly corrosive environments, such as those encountered in chemical processing equipment, power generation and industrial pumps. It provides superior corrosion resistance, superior strength and superior abrasion resistance over types 304, 316 and S31700 stainless steels.

Custom 450 is a precipitation hardening stainless steel enhanced by the addition of additional alloying elements and by cold working to increase its strength. Custom 450 (UNS S45000) is a martensitic stainless steel containing a high level of chromium and nickel for enhanced corrosion resistance and strength. Possible applications for this alloy include fasteners, pump and valve parts, shafts, rolled rings and medical implants.

Custom 450 exhibits excellent machinability due to its combination of time-hardenable martensitic structure and high levels of chromium and carbon. This alloy is able to be machined with slow speeds, shallow depths and light feed rates, as recommended by a professional machinist. To produce optimum cutting benefits, use high-speed steel-tipped tools and cutting speeds of between 300 and 500 feet per minute.

Custom 450’s strength and resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures are the main benefits of the alloy.
