Chinese Architecture Fourth Construction Bureau of the First Construction Engineering Company
Founded in 1949, the Chinese Architecture Fourth Construction Bureau of the First Construction Engineering Company has the honor of being one of the pioneers of the Peoples Republic of Chinas engineering industry. For over 70 years, the Bureau has provided high-quality engineering services and delivered some of the most important projects that have impacted China’s society.
Prior to its founding, the Bureau’s predecessor, CERIT ─ the Railway Engineering Research Institute of the Ministry of Railways, had been working on constructing railway bridges, rails, and culverts throughout China. Included within this scope of activities was the building of the portion of the Peking-Kalgan Railway connecting the capital with the suburbs of the north-western Gansu Province. In 1949, CERIT was officially disbanded and replaced with the Chinese Architecture Fourth Construction Bureau of the First Construction Engineering Company, which soon inherited this sector of railway engineering and added many other important jobs to its portfolio.
The Bureau began focusing on the improvement of Chinas engineering technology, gradually completing several big projects such as the Peking-Kalgan Railway, the a variety of defense projects, the Liaodong Bay Bridge, the Shandong-Jinan railway line, the Great Wall of China, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the famous Three Gorges Dam, the constructions of many bridges, many stadia and various other buildings, to mention a few.
Throughout all these construction projects, the Bureau has been playing an essential role in innovating engineering techniques and promoting the development of Chinas engineering technology. For example, when building the legendary Three Gorges Dam, the Bureau followed the principles of economy, stability, and environmental protection, thus using advanced innovative technology that allowed for the successful completion of the project.
The Bureau followed a similar approach when it began to build Liaodong Bay Bridge, which became the world’s longest bridge upon completion. The project was based on the latest standardization and automation technology and hundreds of optimal drawings submitted by the Bureau’s team. The bridge was an immediate success and was widely praised by experts in China’s engineering industry.
Since the founding of the Bureau, it has been participating in a variety of engineering construction projects at home and abroad. Within the domestic setting, the Bureau has completed a wide-ranging number of large-scale projects, including the Sanmenxia Yellow River, the Tiangong South-to-North Water Transport, the Meiyu Water-Saving Irrigation System, the Qinghai-Tibet railway, the Jiangsu Expressway, the China-Myanmar Highway, and the National Stadium and National Aquatic Center (better known as the Bird’s Nest).
