Mechanical properties of 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel at room temperature
Austenitic stainless steels are widely used for different types of equipment due to their excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature creep strength and good machinability. 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) is an austenitic stainless steel that possesses the properties mentioned above and, as a result, suitable for many applications. It is composed of 15 to 17 wt % of chromium, 2 wt % of nickel and manganese, and 0.2 wt % of nitrogen.
At room temperature, 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel demonstrates a variety of mechanical properties, e.g. tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness, that are fundamental to the evaluation of materials. Tensile strength, an important mechanical property, is defined as the maximum load sustained by a specimen without failure. Yield strength is the point at which the specimen gets permanently deformed, and is gradually reduced with further increments of stress up to the ultimate tensile strength. Elongation is the amount of extension a specimen undergoes when subjected to a load. Following tensile test, the hardness of the specimen can be evaluated by the Brinell or Vickers testing systems. This will provide an indication of the ability of a material to resist denting and scratching.
Tensile tests conducted on 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel at room temperature, showed that the material yielded a maximum tensile strength of 690 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 610 MPa. Yield strength for this material at room temperature was found to be 205 MPa. A total elongation of 35 % was obtained for specimens with a gauge length of 50 mm. The hardness of the 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel was found to be 216 HB.
Generally, 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel exhibits good mechanical properties, e.g. tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness, at room temperature. The material has good wear and corrosion resistance and, due to its good creep strength and machinability, it is suitable for many applications.
Although the mechanical properties of 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel are generally strong, they may deteriorate in environments containing chlorine and chlorine derivatives. Furthermore, the performance of the material can be reduced by the presence of sulfur. Therefore, it is important for users of this material to investigate possible sources of contamination before applying it.
In summary, 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) austenitic stainless steel is a high-performance material due to its good mechanical properties at room temperature. It is highly corrosion-resistant and has good thermal creep strength and machinability, making it a suitable choice for many applications. It is important to consider any potential sources of contamination that could negatively affect the performance of this material.
