Molybdenum is an important resource in modern industry and an important part of modern manufacturing technologies around the world. It is used to create alloys and compounds that have a broad range of applications, most notably in the production of high-strength steels. As an important resource, proper disposal, reuse and recycling of molybdenum is vitally important.

Molybdenum recycling typically begins with the collection of scrap, which may be from industrial or commercial processes, or from post-consumer scrap collected from households. Industrial waste sources may include collecting molybdenum scrap from machining, manufacturing, or welding processes. In post-consumer scrap, molybdenum is generally found in waste generated from electronics, computers, and cars.

The collected molybdenum is then sorted, classified, and cleaned. All materials that are not molybdenum-containing are separated and discarded or recycled in other ways. Once the molybdenum is sorted and cleaned, the recycling process can begin. Molybdenum usually comes in the form of slag or filings, and needs to be smelted and refined to recover the pure molybdenum.
