AISI 316N (00Cr17Ni12Mo2N) and AISI 316LN (00Cr17Ni13Mo2N) are two types of stainless steel mainly used in the food and beverage industry and the pharmaceutical industry. They are both austenitic stainless steel grades, which offer benefits of good formability and weldability, good strength and corrosion resistance. The grade 316LN is an extra low-carbon modification of the standard grade 316 and can be used in applications exposed to higher temperatures. The following table shows the chemical composition of these two grades of stainless steel in percent by weight.

The differences between AISI 316N and AISI 316LN are in their carbon and nitrogen composition, hence their corrosion resistance and mechanical properties respectively. AISI 316N has the ability to resist acidic media attack and minimize corrosion due to its high chromium and nickel content, whereas AISI 316LN has higher corrosion resistance due to its extra low-carbon content and higher nitrogen content, which ultimately improves its mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. The grade 316LN can also be welded easily and can be machined in the same way as AISI 316N.
