UNS S31760 is an austenitic stainless steel alloy that is classified as a superaustenitic stainless steel. It is a low carbon, high nitrogen grade that features enhanced resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting in an array of acidic and chloride containing environments. It also provides good resistance to localized corrosion such as stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion.
UNS S31760 is designated as a “superaustenitic” grade because of its superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to other 300 series stainless steels. Aside from this improved corrosion resistance, S31760 also offers the highest level of strength and durability compared to its counterparts. It has a high yield strength and can stand up to higher temperatures, pressures, and impact stresses.
S31760 has a composition of 14 to 15.5% chromium, 3.2 to 3.8% molybdenum, 2.6 to 3.6% nitrogen, 0.9 to 1.3% nickel, 1.6 to 2.2% manganese, 0.05 to 0.15% carbon, 0.3 to 0.5% silicon, 1.5 to 2% titanium, and a balance of iron. It also has a typical ferrite number of 15. It is considered to be an austenitic steel due to its low-carbon content. Its unique chemistry makes it ideal for use in many applications where corrosion resistance, strength, and durability are key.
UNS S31760 has excellent corrosion resistance and is used in a variety of applications such as in petroleum processing equipment, marine components, and industrial process piping systems. It is also used in storage tanks and pressure vessels, especially ones that are exposed to highly corrosive fluids. Due to its high nitrogen content and excellent performance in the presence of chloride, the alloy is well-suited for use in the chemical and petrochemical industries, especially for components requiring resistance to local corrosion.
S31760 offers superior mechanical properties, including good ductility and toughness. It can be easily cold formed and welded into shapes, and can also be machined and polished. The alloy also has excellent fatigue strength, making it a great choice for components requiring strength and longevity.
For use with welding, UNS S31760 can be welded with any of the commonly used stainless steel welding alloys in either gas shielded or gasless welds. Welding with the alloy can be tricky due to the high nitrogen content and titanium levels, and it can be necessary to use a lower heat input and slightly slower speeds to prevent cracking.
UNS S31760 has a wide range of uses due to its excellent corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties. The alloy is a great choice for use in components that require superior corrosion resistance and strength in environments where chlorides are present. It is also ideal for use in storage tanks and process piping systems in highly corrosive fluids, as well as pressure vessels. Additionally, due to its good ductility and machinability, the alloy is well suited for a number of fabrication projects, including welding and forming.
