Carpenter Technology Corporation produces alloy steels with the brand name of CarTech Alloy Stainless Steel S40310. This high-performance ferritic stainless steel is designed for elevated temperature applications and contains 11.5%–13.5% chromium and 0.25% molybdenum.

The alloy chemical composition ranges from 12%-13.5% chromium, 0.25-0.4% molybdenum, with a maximum of 0.50% nickel and 0.5-1.5% manganese. Trace amounts of other elements are also present such as nitrogen, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and other compounds.

CarTech Alloy S40310 is part of Carpenter Technology’s family of ferritic stainless steels. This alloy is sometimes known by other names, including alloys AISI, SAE, A212 and 1Cr12. It is a durable and reliable alloy, exhibiting excellent creep strength, good formability and good weldability. CarTech Alloy S40310 has excellent resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 1800°F (982°C).

The mechanical properties of CarTech Alloy S40310 enable it to be readily used for applications that require high strength, good creep resistance, higher temperature stability and good resistance to oxidation in air or inert gas atmospheres. This makes CarTech Alloy S40310 a great choice for various components such as custom designed turbine blades and blisks, burners and fuel nozzles, as well as various other high temperature applications where corrosion resistance is desired.

CarTech Alloy S40310 has excellent thermal conductivity and good fabricability compared to other stainless steels. Further processing of the alloy is not required for most applications, and CarTech Alloy S40310 is usually weldable. This alloy is often cold worked to achieve the desired parts or components prior to final heat treatment.

CarTech Alloy S40310 receives the Duplex Plus Specification rating by the National Association of Steel Distributors (NASD), giving it an A+ rating in terms of quality and performance, and making it eligible for to be used in critical projects requiring high-strength and long-term service.

Carpenter Technology offers fatigue strength elevation treatments pending available alloy and application specifications. The alloy is available in a variety of forms including bars, blooms, flat-rolled products, and forgings.

CarTech Alloy S40310 is extremely expensive compared to other alloys, however, the cost is usually more than balanced by its excellent performance characteristics. It can be readily used in any application that requires exceptional performance from a ferritic stainless steel, such as those requiring high temperature oxidations and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

S40310 is an austenitic stainless steel in the 1Cr12 grade. It is a non-magnetic, low-carbon alloy that offers excellent corrosion and heat resistance, as well as exceptional mechanical properties. The primary alloying elements of this alloy are Chromium, Nickel and Molybdenum.

Chromium is the critical element, providing corrosion and oxidation resistance. This requires a minimum of 11% Chromium, which provides the hard inert oxide film known as the passive film that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. The remaining alloying elements add stainless steel strength and other desirable properties.

The addition of Nickel increases the hardenability of S40310. Nickel is also an important stabilizer, which helps preserve the beneficial corrosion resistance of the chromium. Molybdenum improves creep strength as temperatures rise and increases corrosion resistance particularly in reducing acids.

S40310 is a non-hardenable alloy. This means that it will not respond to heat treatment in the same way as carbon steels but instead must be worked cold to produce parts with the desired characteristics. Because of its ductility S40310 can be easily formed into a variety of shapes, making it well suited to many applications.

This stainless steel has a low-carbon content, below 0.030%, which helps to reduce the possibility of sensitization, a phenomenon in which chromium carbides can form in the microstructure and can cause corrosion. The presence of an even, non-porous microstructure further helps to prevent corrosion.

S40310 can be used in many industrial applications, including automotive components, food processing and preparation equipment, elevator components, and equipment exposed to humid environments. It can also be found in architecture and sculpture, as stainless steel can be welded and fabricated into many shapes, a property which lends itself well to artistic expression.
