00Cr17 is a ultra-low carbon ferritic stainless steel grade with nitrogen-containing Ni-Cr-Mo austenite steel with good intercrystalline corrosion resistance. It is mainly used in metallurgical and chemical industries, chemicals and fertilizers, oil refining and electric power. This steel grade is renowned for its superior weldability and its outstanding resistance to corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

The 00Cr17 steel has excellent cold bending properties, and its high tensile strength and yield strength make it ideal for cold forming applications. It is also easy to weld, which is why it is often used in the production of structures and pipe systems. The steel also has a high fatigue strength, making it suitable for parts that experience variable loads.

The chemical composition of 00Cr17 is listed as follow. Carbon content is the lowest of the ferritic stainless steels, with a C max of 0.03%. The other elements include 13% – 17% Chromium, 0.75% – 1.15% Nickel and 0.50% – 0.80% Molybdenum. Nitrogen is also added to the alloy to help improve the strain aging properties and to promote the precipitation hardening of the material. 00Cr17 is a ferritic stainless steel and is designed to be a cost-effective solution for structural components and piping applications.

The steel has a low thermal expansion rate, which prevents stress build-up and distortions caused by temperature variations. This is attractive in applications where it is important to minimize the distortions and stresses such as pressure vessels and valves. The steel also has an above-average electrical and thermal conductivity, making it suitable for many electrical applications such as AC/DC motors and heat exchangers.

Generally, 00Cr17 can be machined similar to carbon steels. It has reasonable machinability and good surface finish while maintaining its strength and ductility. The material is fairly soft and can be worked using conventional machining methods. High-speed steel and carbide tools are more effective provided the cutting speed is kept moderate.

Wear resistant grades such as Nitronic 50, can be machined, although it may be necessary to increase the tool life considerably and the surface finish will not usually be as good as with other stainless alloys.

In general, the 00Cr17 ferritic stainless steel grade has good formability and ductility when annealed, and has good weldability as well. Standard welding methods can be used and very small amounts of ferrite are retained after welding. The high chloride ion content in the weld metal and in the heat affected zone of austenitic stainless steels is an area of concern when using this grade in marine environments.

00Cr17 steel has good corrosion resistance, particularly to pitting and crevice corrosion. It is suitable for many corrosive process environments, including sea water and industrial chemicals. The grade is not as resistant to oxidation and elevated temperatures as the austenitic stainless steels, however.

The 00Cr17 ferritic stainless steel grade can be an economical and practical choice for many applications in the chemical, oil and gas industries as well as in the power generation sector. It is an economical alternative to more costly austenitic grades when moderately elevated temperatures and corrosive environments are present. Provided proper design, fabrication and welding practices are followed, it can be a cost-effective solution for many applications.

00Cr17 stainless steel (00Cr17, S11703) belongs to ferritic stainless steel and is mainly used in the production of medical, kitchen utensils and the like. It has good formability, strong rust resistance and weldability.

The main chemical composition of 00Cr17 stainless steel (mass fraction %):

C= 0.05, Si= 0.2, Mn= 1.00, P=0.025, S= 0.01, Cr= 17.0 ~ 19.0, Ni= 0.6, Nb= 0.3, Cu= 0.3

The mechanical properties of 00Cr17 stainless steel (20 ℃, annealed state): tensile strength σb (MPa): ≧ 400, yield strength σp (MPa): 250, elongation δ (%): ≧ 40, impact toughness Akv (J): ≧ 50

00Cr17 stainless steel has good machinability, weldability and excellent formability. After hot working and cold forming, it has good comprehensive mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and weldability.

The characteristics of 00Cr17 stainless steel are non-magnetic, and the chromium content is high and the nickel content is low. Therefore, it has low hardness and magnetic properties, and its corrosion resistance is similar to 304 stainless steel.

After annealing, the hardness of 00Cr17 stainless steel is not high and the electrical conductivity is poor, so it is mostly used in the manufacture of low load, low temperature and non-corrosive parts. In addition, it can also be used for mechanical parts that are not bearing heavy loads.
