S30510 (1Cr18Ni12) austenitic stainless steel belongs to the chromium-nickel austenitic stainless-steel family. Characteristic of this steel is the addition of nitrogen and lack of molybdenum, which makes it superior to its sister AISI 304 in term of strength and hardness. Also, the presence of austenite in its microstructure gives the steel excellent ductility and toughness.

Tensile strength of S30510 (1Cr18Ni12) is highly dependent on the manufacturing process. In order to achieve maximum tensile strength, any mechanical working process (tempering, rolling or annealing) should be avoided. The cold-working process should be adjusted to obtain ultimate tensile strength of 480-700 MPa. In the normalized condition, the strength increases to 600-800 MPa.

The elongation at break of S30510 (1Cr18Ni12) is usually 15-30% and it is highly dependent on the cold-working process. In the annealed condition, it is usually between 20-30%. Furthermore, the hardness of this steel ranges between 165-220HB in the annealed condition and 180-240HB in the hardened condition. After the cold-working process, the hardness reduces to 150HB.

The creep strength of S30510 (1Cr18Ni12) is better than AISI 304 steel and it is mainly affected by the addition of nitrogen into the microstructure. This stainless-steel is highly resistant to creep failure even at elevated temperatures (600-800°C) for prolonged periods of time (several hours).

Finally, the corrosion resistance of S30510 is better than AISI 304 steel if it is properly processed. Properly annealing, passivation, and pickling processes should be used to achieve maximum corrosion resistance. If it is cold-worked, the corrosion resistance is reduced to medium levels.
