Molybdenum compounds are a class of compounds which contain the element Molybdenum as part of their chemical structure. Molybdenum compounds are found in various forms such as oxides, sulfides, and nitrates, and they are used in a range of applications, from electronics to agricultural fertilizers.

The preparation of molybdenum compounds depends on the particular aspect of the compound being created. In the case of oxides, the primary ingredient is molybdenum dioxide. To prepare this, molybdenum dioxide is generally dissolved in an acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. The solution is then brought to a boil and slowly allowed to cool. Iron can be used in the preparation of molybdenum nitrates. First, the molybdenum dioxide is added to a solution of iron and sulfuric acid. The solution is heated to a boil and then allowed to cool, allowing the molybdenum to form a nitrate salt which can be collected.

Finally, molybdenum oxychalcogenides can be prepared from molybdenum nitrate and a chalcogen such as sulfur, selenium or tellurium. The two are dissolved in a solution of water, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, and then heated to a boil. Upon cooling, the molybdenum oxychalcogenide will precipitate out of the solution and can be collected for further study.

Molybdenum compounds can be prepared for a variety of purposes and can be used in a variety of different applications. By taking the time to understand the processes involved in their preparation, it is possible to create molybdenum compounds of the highest quality. By doing so, the results of these compounds will be both reliable and useful.
