Fabrication and Heat Treatment

1Cr17Ni7 stainless steel (S11710) can be machined using standard cutting and drilling techniques. It can be readily formed by bending and welding processes. This grade of stainless steel should be noted to be sensitive to cracking in the heat affected zone so hydrogen embrittlement should be avoided in welded components.

Forging

1Cr17Ni7 stainless steel (S11710) can be forged at temperatures between 1100°C and 900°C (2012°F and 1652°F).

Heat Treatment

1Cr17Ni7 stainless steel (S11710) can be solution heat treated using a range of temperatures from 1075°C to 1185°C (1966°F to 2085°F). This grade of stainless steel can be then air cooled or water quenched.

Applications

1Cr17Ni7 stainless steel (S11710) has a good corrosion resistance making it widely used in marine and medical applications. It also finds use in chemical tanks, heat exchangers, food processing equipment and other industrial machinery that requires a combination of high strength and good ductility.

Conclusion

1Cr17Ni7 stainless steel (S11710) is a martensitic grade of stainless steel that provides excellent corrosion resistance and good ductility. Its strength and formability make it well-suited for a variety of applications including marine, medical, and industrial applications. It should be noted that this grade of stainless steel is sensitive to cracking in the heat affected zone so hydrogen embrittlement should be avoided in welded components.

1Cr17 stainless steel (S11710) is a ferritic stainless steel that combines excellent formability, increased strength and other desirable characteristics with good corrosion resistance in moderately corrosive environments. It is commonly used for automotive and industrial applications, such as for exhaust systems, roofing and siding panels, shelving and kitchen appliances.

1Cr17 stainless steel is also known for its magnetic properties. It has a high magnetostrictive coefficient which means it can generate change in shape or force when subjected to a magnetic field. This makes it a popular choice for electrical equipment such as transformers and motors due to its ability to reduce noise and vibration.

1Cr17 stainless steel has a lower carbon content than other ferritic stainless steel alloys, giving it more resistance to carbide precipitation and concomitant susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Additionally, its combination of low carbon and high chromium content makes it relatively corrosion resistant in comparison to other ferritic stainless steel alloys. Its low thermal expansion makes it a good choice for operating in low temperatures, and it can also resist scaling and spalling.

Due to its moderate tensile strength, 1Cr17 stainless steel is often used when fabricating thin walled components and parts, as it does not suffer from deformation. This property further allows for relatively good ductility, allowing for the fabrication of complex and intricate parts with sharp corners and bends.

Overall, 1Cr17 stainless steel is an ideal alloy for parts that need to have good formability and corrosion resistance, combined with a good strength-to-weight ratio, such as for automotive and industrial applications.
