Cadmium Minerals
Cadmium, an essential element in many industries and items we use in our everyday lives, is a by-product of zinc ore processing in most cases. Although it too is a metal, it is mined as an ore rather than as a metal itself. Cadmium is naturally present in the Earth’s crust and can be found in rocks, soil, and minerals. Therefore, it cannot be refined like other metals and must be mined.
The primary ore of cadmium, known as greenockite, is a rare mineral that is very difficult to process. Instead, the main sources of cadmium are zinc ore, smelting by-products, and end-of-life consumer goods. The majority of cadmium is produced as a by-product of zinc ore processing. When zinc ore is processed, small quantities of cadmium are formed from small quantities of the zinc ore that are present. As a result, when zinc ore is mined, it not only contains zinc ore, but also contains traces of cadmium.
The secondary sources for cadmium are from products that use it as a component. These products, such as batteries, electronics, metal plating, and paints, all contain some amount of cadmium.
