Nitronic33 is a martensitic austenitic stainless steel developed by Armco. It is a type 0Cr18Ni3Mn13N alloy, also known as Nitronic33. The properties of Nitronic33 are as follows:

Nitronic33 has an excellent creep and oxidation resistance. It has a good corrosion resistance in both oxidizing and reducing media. The alloy has a unique combination of physical properties, such as excellent formability, weldability, and ductility. The alloy also exhibits a high strength-to-weight ratio.

The yield strength of Nitronic33 is 125 ksi (860 MPa). It has an ultimate tensile strength of 175 ksi (1207 MPa). It also has an elongation of 15%, a fatigue strength of 75k psi (517 MPa). Nitronic33 can also withstand temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C). It has an operating temperature range between -50°F and 650°F ( -46°C to 343°C), and an ultimate tensile strength of 172 ksi (1189 MPa).

Nitronic33 also encompasses a wide range of wear-resistant properties. It has high hardness, abrasion and erosion resistance. The hardness, elastic modulus and all other mechanical properties of the metal are extremely durable. Nitronic33 also displays excellent high performance in the cold-rolled, welded and drawn condition.

Nitronic33 also has excellent temperature stability and corrosion resistance. The alloy’s corrosion resistance is comparable to other stainless steels and is superior to most steels conventionally used in severe marine and industrial applications. The alloy has a high temperature corrosion resistance, shows good resistance to organic acids and chlorine-containing solutions

Unlike most stainless steel alloys, Nitronic 33 is able to maintain its strength and hardness at temperatures up to 600 °C (1,112 °F). This allows components constructed from the alloy to be used in extreme temperatures and in high-wear applications. Additionally, the alloy has a yield strength of 450 MPa (65 ksi). This is considerably higher than ferritic and martensitic stainless steels typically used for components in mechanical engineering applications.

The good wear and corrosion resistance qualities of Nitronic 33 are due to the high levels of nitrogen, chromium, nickel, and manganese found in the alloy. Chromium provides superior resistance to oxidation and corrosion, while Nickel increases ductility, toughness, and general corrosion resistance. Manganese, in turn, contributes to hardening and hardness as well as an increased wear resistance compared to other stainless steel alloys.

Nitronic 33 is also non-magnetic, making it an ideal material choice for components in sensitive applications where magnetic fields could be an issue. The alloy is also non-magnetic and highly resistant to galling, making it an attractive choice for many fastener applications.

Given the superior temperature and corrosion resistance properties, Nitronic 33 offers superior performance in many industrial applications. Furthermore, the alloy is easy to machine compared to other heat-treatable stainless steel grades and possess a high level of uniformity from casting to casting. Ultimately, Nitronic 33 is used in many applications where superior wear and corrosion resistance are a must.
