Introduction
Martensitic stainless steel S45710 (1Cr13Mo) is a high strength grade of stainless steel that contains about 11% chromium. It is commonly used for applications that require corrosion resistance and high strength, including pump and valve components, power plant components, and heavy machinery parts. The material is also used in applications where good formability is needed, such as exhaust systems.
General Properties
Martensitic stainless steel S45710 (1Cr13Mo) offers good corrosion resistance, while wear and fatigue resistance are good to excellent. It also has excellent formability, machinability, and weldability. It can be hardened to achieve a higher level of strength and hardness than the austenitic grades. The material has a lower carbon content than the ferritic grades and is less prone to chromium carbide precipitation during heat treatment.

Applications
Martensitic stainless steel S45710 (1Cr13Mo) can be found in a variety of applications, including:
•Pumps and valves
•Power plant components
•Heavy machinery parts
•Exhaust systems
•Food processing equipment
•Marine and chemical processing equipment
•Heat exchangers
•Pressure vessels
•Drill bits and annular cutters
Heat Treatment
The martensitic grades are heat treated to achieve a range of hardness levels depending on the application. In general, the material is heat treated in the range of 500°F – 1200°F (260°C – 650°C). High temperatures will achieve the highest levels of hardness, but lower temperatures can be used in applications where the highest level of hardening is not required. The material needs to be slowly cooled after heat treatment to help maintain the hardness.
Welding
S45710 (1Cr13Mo) is readily weldable. It is best to use a low carbon grade filler material (309L is the most commonly used). Good shielding gas cover is needed for all welding operations, and preheat techniques may need to be employed for thick sections to reduce the risk of cracking.
Summary
Martensitic stainless steel S45710 (1Cr13Mo) is a high strength grade of stainless steel that contains about 11% chromium. It offers excellent corrosion resistance and good wear and fatigue resistance. The material is also readily weldable, although techniques such as preheat may need to be employed for thick sections. The material is used in a variety of applications, including pumps and valves, power plant components, heavy machinery parts, and exhaust systems.
