Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is a semi-austenitic precipitation hardening stainless steel with good oxidation resistance, excellent in high strength at temperatures up to about 538°C (1000°F). Designed for medical, aerospace and automotive applications, 15-7 Mo PH is annealed between 899–1010°C (1650–1850°F) and rapidly cooled. It is melted in an electric-arc furnace using vacuum-induction melting, argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) and vacuum arc-remelting (VAR). The high strength of this alloy makes it ideal for high-stress turbocharger applications.
Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is composed primarily of iron and chromium and is further strengthened by additions of nickel, copper, silicon, molybdenum, aluminum, and nitrogen. It has a high chromium-nickel content which provides excellent corrosion resistance in most environments and a low carbon content for improved weldability. The high nickel content imparts superior oxidation resistance, as well as good strength retention properties through heat treating. The molybdenum provides an additional layer of protection against corrosion in saltwater environments. Aluminum, nitrogen and silicon improve formability and workability.
Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening steel that can be both annealed and age-hardened. Annealing this alloy is performed in order to restore its ductility and corrosion resistance, which are affected by the heat-treating process. Age hardening occurs at a temperature of 454°C (850°F) and consists of heating the material to a temperature above the upper critical temperature, then aging it at a temperature slightly below the age-hardenable temperature.
Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is designed for components requiring high strength and good corrosion resistance at temperatures up to 538°C (1000°F). It is particularly suitable for uses in automotive engines, aerospace components and medical applications. Due to its high strength, Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is an ideal choice for parts that must withstand high temperature and pressure.
Due to its excellent oxidation resistance, Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is often used to manufacture components that must be exposed to extremely high temperatures, such as turbine blades in aircraft engines and exhaust manifolds in internal combustion engines. It is also used to make springs and fasteners, such as nuts and bolts. Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is highly resistant to wear and stress corrosion, making it a great choice for components that are exposed to heavy wear and tear.
Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is easy to weld and can be joined using a variety of welding processes, such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). It can also be joined using reflow and resistance spot welding.
Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is available in a wide range of product forms, such as sheets, plates, bars, and forgings. It is also available in a variety of grades and specifications, including ASTM A564, MIL-S-5059, and AMS 5520.
Alloy 15-7 Mo PH is a versatile, high strength stainless steel that offers good corrosion resistance and excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. It is ideal for parts exposed to wear and stress, as well as components subjected to high temperatures and pressures. With a wide range of available forms, grades, and specifications, Alloy 15-7 Mo PH can be used to manufacture various components for a variety of applications.
