Custom 450, also known as UNS S45000, is a martensitic stainless steel alloy with an emphasis on resistance to both environmental and intergranular corrosion. The alloy contains approximately 17-19 percent chromium and 14-16 percent nickel, making it well-suited to a variety of corrosive atmospheres. The remaining alloying elements, molybdenum, copper, and niobium, are added to further enhance the corrosion resistance. This grade of stainless is available in a variety of conditions, including annealed, cold-worked, or heat-treated.
Custom 450 provides its users with excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, as well as high tensile strength. It also has high fatigue strength and good creep resistance at elevated temperatures, making it ideal for many industrial applications. Its resistance to corrosion and crevice corrosion, as well as its dimensional stability and excellent fabricability, further enhance its value in industry.
Custom 450’s physical properties are dependent on both its chemical composition and heat treatment process. Its hardness rating increases with an increase in the amount of nickel and molybdenum contained in the alloy, while its ductility decreases. Its tensile strength also increases with cold-working and when aged at higher temperatures.
Custom 450 is widely used in several applications such as pressure vessel components, fasteners, shafts, medical implants and aircraft landing gear. It is approved for use in safety-critical nuclear components in most countries and is suitable for applications such as valves, piping and marine equipment due to its outstanding resistance to corrosion in both aqueous and gaseous environments.
Custom 450 is an alloy that will remain a highly versatile material for many industrial applications due to its combination of good corrosion resistance, fatigue strength and tensile strength. It is available in a variety of forms including annealed, cold-worked and heat treated making it an excellent choice for productive and economical stainless steel. With its ability to excel in both elevated and moderately hostile environments, Custom 450 has been a long-time favorite among engineers and industrial manufacturers.
