Composition of AISI 302HQ
AISI 302HQ is an austenitic stainless steel that possesses higher corrosion resistance than that of other austenitic stainless steels due to the presence of higher chromium and lower carbon content. AISI 302HQ is a type of stainless steel categorized as an 18-8/Cr-Ni. This 18-8 stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.15% and a maximum chromium content of 17%. Also, it has a maximum nickel content of 9% and a maximum molybdenum content of 2%.
In terms of chemical composition, AISI 302HQ contains, by weight %:
• C – 0.15%
• Mn – 2%
• Si – 0.75%
• P – 0.045%
• S – 0.03%
• Cr – 17%
• Ni – 9%
• Mo – 2%
AISI 302HQ is a multipurpose grade which is good for welding, forming and cold working operations. It offers higher oxidation resistance than that of other 18-8 grades due to its higher nickel content. AISI 302HQ is commonly used in petrochemical applications, power generating equipment, oil and gas refining, chemical processing, and healthcare facilities. It is also used in applications that require corrosion resistance together with good dimensional stability, high tensile strength, non-magnetic properties and formability.
The high corrosion resistance of AISI 302HQ is attributed to its superior nickel-chromium content which provides a pleasant resistance to corrosion in both acidic and neutral environments. The high chromium content in the alloy improves its resistance to oxidation, carburization and its resistance to stress scaling under elevated temperatures. It also has excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion which makes AISI 302HQ suitable for use in a wide range of applications.
In terms of mechanical properties, AISI 302HQ has a proof strength of 275MPa (min) with a tensile strength of 690MPa (min) and a yield strength of 340MPa (min). Its elongation at break is 40%. Its modulus of elasticity is 212,000MPa. AISI 302HQ has good cold workability which makes it suitable for cold working. Its forming capabilities include spinning, pinning and coining. Its machinability ratings are equivalent to iron and is M30 in terms of the machinability index.
In terms of physical properties, AISI 302HQ has a density of 8.00g/cm3 and a melting point ranging from 1480°C – 1540°C. Its electrical resistivity is 360 microOhms•in at 20°C. AISI 302HQ has excellent non-magnetic properties which are derived from its higher nickel content as compared to other 18-8 grades. The composition of AISI 302HQ makes it readily formable and weldable, making it suitable for many applications which require outstanding mechanical properties and elevated temperature resistance.
Overall, AISI 302HQ is a multipurpose grade of stainless steel that is widely used due to its superior corrosion resistance along with its excellent mechanical properties, non-magnetic properties and formability. It is commonly used in petrochemical applications, power generating equipment, oil and gas refining, chemical processing, and healthcare facilities. This 18-8 grade of stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.15%, a maximum chromium content of 17%, a maximum nickel content of 9% and a maximum molybdenum content of 2%. It offers good oxidation resistance, great corrosion resistance and excellent formability and weldability, making AISI 302HQ a suitable choice for applications that require these features.
