Introduction
00Cr17Ni12Mo2(AISI316) and 00Cr17Ni14Mo2(AISI316L) are two important grades of the high-performance stainless steel. 316 and 316L are C-Mn-Ni-Mo austenitic stainless steels containing 16%-18% Cr, 12%-14% Ni, 2%-3% Mo, respectively. BothMaterialshavehighstrength, excellentcorrosionresistance and excellent mechanical properties.
Mechanical Properties of AISI 316 and AISI 316L at High Temperature
AISI 316 and AISI 316L have good thermal stability at high temperatures, the strength of the steel decreases gradually with increasing temperature. The strength of the steel at elevated temperature can be determined based on the tensile strength and yield strength at room temperature.
The tensile strength at temperature of 300℃, 400℃ and 500℃ of AISI 316 and AISI 316L are shown in Table. 1. AISI 316 has higher tensile strength at high temperatures than AISI 316L. At 500℃, the tensile strength of AISI 316 is about 70MPa higher than AISI 316L.
Table.1: Tensile strength and yield strength at 300℃, 400℃ and 500℃ of AISI 316 and AISI 316L
AISI 316 and AISI 316L also have excellent impact strength and fatigue strength at high temperature. The impact strength of AISI 316 and AISI 316L at 300℃, 400℃ and 500℃ are shown in Table2. The impact strength of AISI 316 is about 25% higher than AISI 316L at 500℃. The fatigue strength of AISI 316 and AISI 316L at high temperatures is similar and both materials can maintain good fatigue strength at elevated temperature.

Conclusion
AISI 316 and AISI 316L are two important grades of high-performance stainless steel. At high temperatures, AISI 316 has higher tensile strength and impact strength than AISI 316L. Both materials have excellent corrosion resistance and good fatigue strength at high temperature.
