Steel 4Cr13

Steel 4Cr13 (X20Cr13) is Martensitic stainless steel. 4Cr13 is often referred to as 420 steel. It contains elements such as 13% Chromium (Cr) and 4% Molybdenum (Mo). Its chemical composition is given in the table below.

4Cr13 is one of the mainstream stainless steel grades in China and is commonly used for applications such as knives and forks. It has quite a high hardness and is easy to work with. Typical applications include manifold gaskets, valve parts, etc.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of 4Cr13 is as follows:

• Carbon (C): 0.37-0.45%

• Manganese (Mn): 0.60-0.80%

• Silicon (Si): 0.17-0.37%

• Nickel (Ni): 0.25% Max

• Phosphorous (P): 0.040% Max

• Chromium (Cr): 12.0-14.0%

• Molybdenum (Mo): 3.0-4.0%

• Sulfur (S): 0.030% Max

• Copper (Cu): 0.25% Max

• Nitrogen (N): 0.10% Max

Microstructure

The microstructure of 4Cr13 steel consists of a martensitic matrix with carbides dispersed within it. The carbides form in the steel due to the presence of chromium and molybdenum. The carbides improve the wear resistance of the steel, as well as its ability to resist corrosion.

Weldability

4Cr13 is fairly easy to weld, although it is not suitable for use in welded applications where extreme conditions are encountered. The weldability of 4Cr13 can be improved by using preheating and post-weld heat treatment.

Hardness

4Cr13 steel has a hardness of 45-50 HRC (Rockwell hardness), which means it can withstand wear, tear, abrasion, and scratching when subjected to a significant force.

Applications

4Cr13 steel is a versatile material and is used in a wide variety of applications. The most common areas of use are:

• Cutlery: Due to its high hardness, 4Cr13 is ideal for use in high-end cutlery such as kitchen knives, chef knives, and pocket knives.

• Medical Applications: 4Cr13 steel is often used in medical applications such as surgical instruments, dental instruments, and prosthesis components.

• Valve Parts: 4Cr13 steel is commonly used in valve parts due to its superior wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

• Manifold Gaskets: 4Cr13 steel is often used in manifold gaskets due to its high hardness and resistance to wear.

• Couplings and Fasteners: 4Cr13 steel is used in coupling and fastener components due to its superior strength and toughness.

Conclusion

4Cr13 is a martensitic stainless steel that offers superior wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It has a hardness of 45-50 HRC, which makes it suitable for use in a variety of applications, from cutlery to fasteners. 4Cr13 is easy to weld and is often used in manifolds, valves, and other components due to its superior strength and toughness.
