Applications of AISI316 and AISI316L Steels
AISI316 and AISI316L steels are two types of austenitic stainless steels that have similar chemical compositions and properties, yet differ slightly in their physical characteristics. AISI316 steel is made up of 0.08% C, 2.00% Mn, 0.045% P, 2.00% Si, 16.00-18.00% Cr, 10.00-14.00% Ni, 2.00-3.00% Mo and 0.2% Nb. On the other hand, AISI316L steel is made up of 0.03% C, 2.00% Mn, 0.045% P, 2.00% Si, 16.00-18.00% Cr, 10.00-14.00% Ni, 2.00-3.00% Mo and 0.2% Nb. Despite the small differences in their compositions, both steels have excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and are weldable – making them widely used in the industrial, medical and domestic markets.
AISI316 and AISI 316L steels have a number of applications. One of their most important applications is in the construction industry, where they are used to make components that are exposed to harsh weather conditions and other tougher environments where other materials cannot withstand. AISI316 and AISI316L steels are known to be more resistant to corrosion than other metals and alloys, making them ideal for constructing residential and commercial buildings, bridges, ducts, tanks, ships, and underground piping systems. What’s more, these steels can also be used for decorative purposes because of their attractive appearance and polished finish.
The automotive industry is another example of an industry that utilizes the properties of AISI316 and AISI316L steels. This material is especially useful for making parts that are exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations and for ensuring structural integrity. AISI316 and AISI316L steels are often used to make vehicle components such as exhaust systems, wheel hubs, spark plugs, brake discs and various types of oils pumps. Furthermore, they can also be used to manufacture components that are exposed to salt and other contaminants such as marine propeller shafts, reinforcing plates, and nuts and bolts.
The healthcare industry is one more example of an industry that utilizes the positive characteristics of AISI316 and AISI316L steels. These materials are preferred for making medical equipment components such as sutures and implants, dialysis tubes, and filter housings, because of their superior corrosion resistance and low levels of contamination. Besides, they are also resistant to most organic and inorganic acids, and can withstand high temperatures, which makes them ideal for sterilization.
AISI316 and AISI316L steels are also extensively used in the food processing and preparation industry. Because these materials are non-toxic and do not react with many substances, they are extensively used for the manufacture of containers for storing food and beverages. These containers are known to be highly resistant to unfavourable conditions such as high temperature and food contaminants, which allows them to deliver a longer life span and high performance.
Overall, AISI316 and AISI316L steels are extremely versatile and durable materials that have several applications in industries such as construction, automotive, healthcare and food processing. As a result, many companies and manufacturers opt to use these materials for parts or components which require high corrosion resistance, low maintenance costs, good formability and weldability.
