Nitronic 40 (0Cr21Ni6Mn9N), an austenitic stainless steel, is known for its corrosion and wear resistance characteristics when compared with other similar stainless steels. This alloy combines a balanced combination of chromium, nickel and molybdenum to improve its general performance.

The balance of chromium and nickel in Nitronic 40 results in a combination of properties that make it unique for many uses. Nitronic 40 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance and improves its stress rupture properties. Additionally, the alloy also offers excellent ductility, toughness, and general corrosion resistance. Nitronic 40 has good formability, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

Applications of Nitronic 40 are found in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and food processing. This alloy may also be used in color coding/labeling applications such as marking pipes, inks, and other products. Additionally, this alloy also exhibits good resistance to crevice and intergranular corrosion in chloride-bearing environments.

Nitronic 40 is considered to be a food grade stainless steel due to its non-toxicity properties. This alloy is used in many food processing applications because it provides superior corrosion resistance when compared to other stainless steels. Additionally, the incomparable formability of Nitronic 40 makes it ideal for producing hygienic food containers. It is also used in dairy tanks and conveyors, food processing elements, sauce pots and other equipment.

Nitronic 40 is also used in many engineering applications. Its superior abrasion and wear resistance makes it ideal for parts that are subjected to high levels of stress or abrasive forces. This alloy is well suited for electrical parts, pump shafts, piston rods, cams and lever arms, valve parts, and aircraft components. Its general corrosion performance makes it suitable for chemical processing applications involving aqueous media.

Finally, Nitronic 40 exhibits excellent weldability characteristics. It can be welded using several processes including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc (GTAW), and electroslag process (ESP). The fusion character of Nitronic 40 also makes it well suited for hot forming and hot forging process.

To summarize, Nitronic 40 steel is an austenitic stainless steel alloy that combines balanced amounts of chromium and nickel with molybdenum to provide excellent wear and corrosion resistance. Its non-toxicity makes it suitable for many food grade applications while its superior weldability character makes it well suited for several engineering uses. Additionally, its superior stress rupture properties make it ideal for parts subjected to high levels of stress or abrasive forces.

Nitronic 40 (UNS S21900; XM-19) is a high manganese austenitic stainless steel. It alloy is highly resistant to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion in addition to excellent corrosion resistance in environments with a very wide pH range. It can be used in temperatures up to 316°C (600°F).

Nitronic 40 has 0.02-0.17% Carbon, 21-25% Chromium, 6-8% Nickel, 3-4% Manganese, 3-4% Molybdenum, 13-17% Iron, 1.6% Silicon and traces of Phosphorus, Sulfur and Nitrogen.

Its excellent resistance to corrosion, high strength and its non-magnetic properties make it an excellent choice for many applications such as springs, aircraft parts, medical implants, engine components and valves. Nitronic 40 is a highly wear resistant material and is commonly used in oil and gas production as well as in food processing equipment.

Nitronic 40 has a high work hardening rate and is relatively easy to fabricate. Common fabrication processes include machining, welding, forming and stamping. It can be stress relieved, aged and carburized.

Since Nitronic 40 contains chromium and nickel, it is more resistant to rust and corrosion than standard austenitic stainless steels. It also has higher strength and wear resistance than standard stainless steels. Nitronic 40 is non-magnetic so it won’t attract metal particles from its environment.

Nitronic 40 is known for its strength, durability and corrosion resistance. Because of its high manganese content it is highly wear resistant. It is a great material for many applications such as industrial, oil and gas applications and food processing.
