Mechanical Properties of AISI347 (0Cr18Ni11Nb)

AISI347 (0Cr18Ni11Nb) is an austenitic stainless steel alloy which is used extensively in industries such as chemical process, construction, offshore and high temperature applications. It is also used extensively in components and equipment which are exposed to highly corrosive atmospheres. This alloy is characterized by good corrosion resistance, superior weldability and good wear resistance. This article evaluates the mechanical properties of AISI347 stainless steel.

This alloy possesses excellent mechanical properties. These include high tensile strength in the range of 776-1060 MPa and 0.2% yield strength in the range of 397-582 MPa. Moreover, this alloy is quite ductile and can be easily machined and formed. Its fatigue strength and impact resistance are also considered to be outstanding amongst stainless steels.

The approximate shear strength of AISI347 stainless steel is 435 MPa. Its hardness ranges from 100-150 BRB, and its modulus of elasticity is around 193 GPa. Further, its thermal expansion coefficient is 16-18.6 micro m/m/°K in the range of 20-100°C. Its poissons ratio is around 0.3.

Regarding its corrosion resistance, AISI347 stainless steel offers superior protection against a wide variety of media. It is resistant to both intergranular and transgranular corrosion. It also offers superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. This stainless steel has excellent weldability due to its low-alloy content and low carbon levels. In regards to its resistance to wear, AISI347 stainless steel offers good wear resistance due to its austenitic structure.

To summarize, AISI347 (0Cr18Ni11Nb) is an austenitic stainless steel alloy which has excellent mechanical properties, such as high tensile strength, good ductility and impressive wear resistance. It is highly corrosion resistant and has excellent weldability. These features make it ideal for many industrial applications.

AISI 347 stainless steel, also known as grade 347 or 1.4550, is an austenitic stainless steel characterized by its high chromium content and improved corrosion resistance compared to other alloys. This grade also contains elements such as niobium (Nb) and molybdenum (Mo) for improved strength. It also exhibits good oxidation resistance, making it suitable for high temperature applications.

AISI 347 offers good strength and hardness characteristics compared to other stainless steels. With a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa, this grade has good tensile strength, yielding a modulus of elasticity of 193 GPa. Furthermore, a minimum hardness of 179 HB can be achieved after quenching and tempering operations.

At elevated temperatures, the AISI 347 grade exhibits good creep resistance and is suitable for use in cryogenic applications. Its thermal conductivity increases with increased temperature, making it suitable for heat-treating applications, while its melting range starts at 1450 °C (2642 °F).

The combination of high chromium and molybdenum content makes AISI 347 resistant to nitric acids and chlorides at both room and elevated temperatures. In terms of weldability, this grade of stainless steel is characterized by good ductility and good resistance to hot cracking, but caution should be exercised in certain applications.

Overall, the AISI 347 stainless steel is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic grade with good strength and tough properties. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including gas turbines, heat exchangers, high temperature components, pressure vessels and general piping.
