Mechanical Properties of AISI 304 and 304L Stainless Steels

AISI 304 and 304L stainless steels are the most commonly used materials for the construction of components for a variety of products due to their outstanding corrosion resistance, excellent machinability and impressive mechanical properties. AISI 304 and 304L stainless steels are often referred to as ‘alloy steels’, because they are composed of a number of different elements. AISI 304 stainless steel consists of a ferrite base alloyed with a minimum amount of chromium (Cr) which gives it corrosion resistance, and a low carbon content which gives it excellent weldability. On the other hand, 304L stainless steel is an alloy of steel, chromium and low levels of molybdenum and no legal definition of its composition.

At room temperature, both AISI 304 and 304L stainless steels have excellent tensile strength, yield strength and ductility. AISI 304 stainless steel has a slightly higher tensile strength than 304L stainless steel, but a lower yield strength than the latter. This difference in yield strength is due to the presence of a small amount of molybdenum in 304L stainless steel, which increases its yield strength.

At room temperature, AISI 304 stainless steel has an elongation of 50%, yield strength of 205 MPa, and tensile strength of 520MPa. The modulus of elasticity for 304 stainless steel is 200GPa. This material has a coefficient of thermal expansion of about 9.0 x 10-6/K. AISI 304L stainless steel has an elongation of 48%, yield strength of 170MPa, tensile strength of 485MPa, modulus of elasticity of 200 GPa and coefficient of thermal expansion of about 9.0 x 10-6/K.

The fatigue strength of AISI 304 stainless steel is very good and can be used in load seeking situations. It has an endurance limit of about 120MPa. The creep resistance of AISI 304 stainless steel at room temperature is also good. The allowable steady state stress range is 110 to 155MPa.

Both AISI 304 and 304L stainless steels have excellent machinability. This material is easily formed, drilled, welded and machined using conventional processes.

In conclusion, AISI 304 and 304L stainless steels are both excellent materials for components in a wide range of products due to their outstanding corrosion resistance, impressive mechanical properties and excellent machinability at room temperature. They both have their own unique mechanical characteristics, and their suitability for use in a specific product should be carefully considered. The differences between AISI 304 and 304L stainless steels should be taken into account when selecting which material is to be used.

Mechanical properties of AISI 304 and AISI 304L Stainless Steels at Room Temperature

AISI 304 and AISI 304L stainless steels are two types of austenitic stainless steels which are widely used for many different applications. AISI304 has an alloy composition of 8.0-10.5wt% Cr and 18-20wt% Ni, whereas AISI304L has an alloy composition of 8.0-12.0wt% Cr and 18-20wt% Ni. Both alloys are excellent materials for making components and equipment that are used in a variety of high temperature, corrosive and oxidizing environments, such as food processing, petroleum and chemical industries.

This paper discusses the mechanical properties of both alloys at room temperature. The mechanical properties of AISI304 and AISI 304L stainless steels tested at room temperature include tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness.

The tensile strength of AISI304 and AISI304L is sampled on a 1 x 1 piece of 316L stainless steel. The results show that AISI304 has a tensile strength of 549MPa, and AISI 304L has a tensile strength of 462MPa. The yield strength for both alloys is equal and is measured to be 310MPa. The hardness for AISI 304 and AISI 304L is measured to be 95 and 88 respectively on the Rockwell C scale. The elongation for both samples also is equal and measured to be 48%.

From the results, it can be seen that AISI 304 has higher tensile strength, hardness and elongation than AISI 304L at room temperature. These properties make AISI 304 more suitable for high temperature, corrosive and oxidizing applications.
