Physical Properties of 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (316NG) Steel
00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (316NG) steel is an austenitic stainless steel typically used for applications that require moderate to high corrosion resistance. The increased level of molybdenum in this alloy improves its toughness and resistance to localized corrosion compared to other commonly used stainless steels such as 304 or 316. This alloys performance is further enhanced by its austenitic, or face centered cubic, microstructure which makes it resistant to intergranular corrosion. Additionally, its strength and ductility, in combination with its metals ability to form a durable passivation layer, make it an ideal material for use in the production of chloride and sulfur containing environments, making it perfect for use in chemical and petroleum processing, heater exchangers and condensers, offshore applications and other industrial environments where high levels of corrosion are expected.
One of the most important and defining characteristics of this particular steel is its high strength. 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 steel has a tensile strength of 690MPa (or 100ksi) and a yield strength of 645MPa (or 93ksi). This is slightly higher than for standard grades of stainless steel like 304, which yields a tensile strength of 590MPa and a yield strength of 380MPa. This improved strength and tear resistance makes 316NG steel ideal for various components and applications, such as thin walled tubes and containers, components parts, industrial tanks, and pressure vessels in chemical and refining plants. The metals exceptional wear and tear resistance makes it perfect for parts and components that are expected to experience high wear or friction during their expected lifetime.
The high chromium and molybdenum content of this steel grade also offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it particularly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. This particular steel grade has an excellent corrosion resistance when exposed to a wide range of environments, such as sea water, acids, bases, ferric chloride and sulfur containing compounds. The steel is also resistant to most oxidizing acids, such as chromic acid, acetic acid and nitric acid. The high chromium content gives the steel a particularly durable passivation layer that further enhances its resistance to corrosion and chemicals.
The weldability of this stainless steel is excellent. The corrosion resistance of the steel is not affected by the forming process, including by welding. Welds made with 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 steel are resistant to corrosion, as well as being less likely to form stress corrosion and cracking. This makes it perfect for use in welding applications in aggressive marine and acidic environments.
Due to its strong corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, this grade of steel is suitable for applications where high levels of strength and corrosion resistance are paramount. The steels enhanced resistance to localized corrosion, its mechanical properties and formability, ease of fabrication and weldability, make it an ideal choice for a variety of industrial applications.
00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (316NG) steel is an austenitic stainless steel that provides excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and ease of fabrication. With its high chromium content, this steel grade is also highly resistant to intergranular corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion, and can be used in aggressive marine and acid environments. Additionally, this grade of steel is highly weldable, making it suitable for use in a variety of industrial applications where strength and durability are required.
