Survey on Teenage Student’s Attitude towards Learning
Teenagers’ learning attitude is an important factor for their academic performance. The way teenagers perceive and handle knowledge will have a direct impact on the progress they make in their schoolwork. Understanding the current attitude of teenagers towards learning is thus essential in providing support and better improvement measures. To this end, a survey is conducted on a sample population of teenage students in high school to probe into the attitude of teenage students towards learning.
The survey comprises of two main parts: a questionnaire and an interview of two sample groups. For the questionnaire, a total of 50 teenage students from 10 different high schools are randomly selected. The questionnaire contains 24 questions covering areas such as their motivation for learning, their self-awareness for learning, their attitude towards learning, and their criteria for evaluating their progress in learning tasks. A 1 to 5 rating scale is used, with 1 being unfavorable and 5 being favorable.
In addition, an interview is conducted between two groups: sample A who obtains good results in their studies and sample B who hasn’t performed so well. This is to assess the different attitudes taken by these two groups of students when they are learning the same subject. A set of 3 open-ended questions is posed to these two groups to gain a deeper understanding of their attitude towards learning. They are asked to discuss topics such as their workload, the difficulty level of their lessons, their perception of the usefulness of their studies, and their ways of tackling problems in their studies.
All the data obtained from the survey will be subjected to statistical analysis. Variables such as percentage, frequency and mean scores will be used to summarize the results, and comparison tests like t-test will be employed. Eventually, the survey results will be presented in forms of tables, graphs and charts.
The findings may provide us with a better understanding on teenage students’ current attitude towards learning and their evaluation criteria for their performance. It is hoped that the findings from this survey can serve as an upgrade from the current textbook-based education and that pedagogies can be developed according to the age and abilities of the students. This may motivate them and improve their attitude towards learning and appreciation of knowledge.
