15–5PH stainless steel is a precipitation-hardened alloy with a wide range of applications. It is a modification of 15-5 stainless steel, containing columbium, copper and niobium as alloying content. This alloy responds nearly as rapidly to age-hardening treatments as alloy 17-4 and is considerably stronger than the 400-series ferritic stainless steels or plain non-meshed chromium stainless.

15–5PH is a precipitation hardening stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance, moderate strength and good formability. This material potentially reduces costs as a higher strength level is achieved than with the more conventional grades of stainless materials. It is a cost-effective choice for its ability to retain appearances and excellent corrosion resistance due to its lower carbon content, making it superior to the 17–4 PH grade in this respect.

The main alloying position of 15–5PH stainless steel is Chromium (15-16%), Nickel (4-5%), Copper (3-4%), Columbium (0.6-1.05%), and Niobium (0.7-1.2%) It has good oxidation resistance up to 1400°F (760°C) and is particularly resistant to carburization and nitriding. 15–5PH also has higher tensile and fatigue strength than other ferritic and martensitic stainless steels, making it a well-suited choice for aerospace and medical applications.

Unlike most other stainless steels which commonly rely on state of the art templates, 15-5 stainless does not require initial heat treatment prior to use. The alloy can be hardened by aging between 1050 and 1150°F (565 and 621°C). After aging, the components require a rapid cooling from the process temperature. The result of rapid cooling is the precipitation of fine particles, thus improving the strength and hardness of 15-5 stainless steel. This characteristic makes 15–5PH a favorable choice for many applications where fast thermal processing is very important.
