High-Strength Carbon Steel Structural 08
High-strength carbon steel structural 08 is an alloy steel that is composed of iron, carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon. The alloying elements of this steel are used to improve its toughness, hardness and abrasion resistance. As one of the most commonly used steel grades for construction, 08 is a versatile and economical alloy.
The highest strength version of 08 is the HT version, which boasts a tensile strength of 800-1200MPa. It is a medium-carbon, quench and tempered steel grade with high strength properties, decent welding properties and good machinability. This steel is frequently used in components of general engineering applications such as a forging pinion, structural components, double cages and more.
Due to its good hardenability characteristics, the HT version of 08 is well suited to the fabrication of components requiring a high degree of toughness and wear resistance. The steel is heat treated to obtain various mechanical values, including yield and tensile strength, hardness and ductility to suit a variety of applications.
08 is also available in a soft annealed condition with a tensile strength of 550-700MPa. The greater softness makes this version suitable for a wide range of structural components and general engineering applications. The soft version of 08 is often used for applications such as press plates and cams, as well as various other components that require a degree of flexibility.
The use of high-strength carbon steel structural 08 offers numerous benefits such as high wear resistance. It is also cost-effective and has a good welding and forming capacity. In addition, with its higher strength levels and excellent hardenability, 08 is ideal for applications that require superior fatigue and fracture resistance.
Although 08 is generally known for its toughness, its reduced flexibility makes it unsuitable for some fatigue and fracture applications. However, the HT version offers superior creep and fracture performance, making it suitable for application in pressure vessel, pipe and other critical assembly components.
High-strength carbon steel structural 08 is an ideal alloy for a variety of general engineering and construction applications. The HT version offers superior strength, hardness and wear resistance, while the annealed version of 08 allows for greater fabrication and weldability. The versatile and economical nature of this steel alloy makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.
