Crane History and Development
The concept of a crane is centuries old and has enabled construction of some of the most iconic structures of our day. Ancient cranes were built using wooden beams and were specific to the type of task they were designed to fulfill. They were slow and lacked durable components, but served their purpose efficiently in those ancient days.
The 18th century saw a significant rise in the use of mobile crane technology. These cranes had the ability to move around and were employed in the construction of old bridges and factories. Steam powered steam cranes were a breakthrough in crane technology, enabling greater power and range with improved accuracy.
The 19th century revolutionized the industrial use of crane with the widespread use of electro-mechanical hoists and jib cranes. The cranes began to take on a new form and were used to carry larger weights and reach greater heights. Electric cranes were used to build massive dams, bridge, and buildings.
The 20th century transformed crane design and capabilities. It began with the development of the telescopic boom, allowing cranes to support heavier weights and to work in a greater range of configurations. This was followed by the advent of the hydraulic crane, enabling each boom to be operated by its own winch, allowing for better control and precision.
The 21st century has continued to advance crane technology. Computer-aided manufacturing, stability systems, and more advanced control mechanisms have been introduced. Today, cranes are capable of carrying more weight, reaching greater heights, and operating with greater reliability, accuracy, and safety.
Today, the application of cranes is nearly limitless. Cranes are used for a variety of tasks such as lifting and moving, hoisting and transporting, and even for dismantling old structures and rebuilding them elsewhere. They’re used in the construction of buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams, and other large structures, as well as in the movement of goods and materials in ports and harbors.
Crane technology has come a long way since its inception many centuries ago. The advancements that have been made have ensured that it remains safe and reliable while improving its accuracy and capability. Cranes continue to be employed in a multitude of industries and are a vital tool in the construction of some of the world’s most impressive structures.
