The Global Fortune 500, a list of the worlds largest corporations as compiled by Fortune magazine, is a widely recognized ranking of the 500 wealthiest and most powerful companies around the globe.

After publication by the magazine, the annual list of the worlds largest companies is rarely forgotten. Whether you want to find out the companies with the biggest assets, the ones generating the largest revenues, the ones that are the most profitable, or just about the companies that the worlds financial elite have deemed the most successful, look no further than the Global Fortune 500 list.

The top 100 spots on the Global Fortune 500 list for 2008 were held by an elite group of multinational companies. The top 10 spots were filled by oil and gas behemoth ExxonMobil, American automotive giant General Motors, followed by Bank of America, Royal Dutch Shell, Wal-Mart, BP, Toyota, Citigroup, Chevron, and Honda, respectively.

In total, America claimed the top 3 spots, while Europe took spots seven (Shell) and ten (Honda). Japan held spots five (Toyota), six (Citigroup), and nine (Chevron), while BP was the sole representative from the United Kingdom in the top 10.

Other companies that earned a spot in the top 100 of the 2008 Global Fortune 500 included J.P. Morgan Chase, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Intel, AT&T, Walmart, Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, Pemex, Volkswagen, Siemens, Johnson & Johnson, and Dell.

In addition to the major international companies, multinational banking and financial groups such as HSBC, UBS, Allianz, and AXA also earned spots in the rankings. So did Japanese holding company Mitsubishi and investments banks like Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse.

The rankings used in the Global Fortune 500 are determined by the magazine in terms of three financial criteria – total revenue, profits, and total assets. Therefore, the companies that appear at the top of the list arent necessarily the wealthiest or the most powerful companies in the world; they are simply those companies that are most successful in terms of those criteria.

While it is difficult to compare companies of different industries, these rankings give a good picture of the size and power of the worlds largest companies. Regardless of the sector or region in which the companies operate, the Global Fortune 500 list of 2008 is a testament to the achievements of the worlds multinational corporations.
