Third Party Logistics

Third party logistics (3PL) is a concept that has been around for decades, but still remains a major component of today’s global supply chain. It involves outsourcing logistics services to specialists who are able to manage the transportation and delivery of goods from the point of origin to the point of sale. Because of its ability to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, 3PL has become a popular solution for companies of all sizes.

The concept of 3PL was initially introduced in the late 1960’s by the prominent scholar, John F. Mazyck. He argued that companies should look to outside providers to fulfill certain transportation and delivery needs that they could not handle on their own. He believed this would open up opportunities for companies to both reduce costs and increase efficiency. Over the years, the idea of 3PL has gained traction as more companies have embraced the idea.

Today, 3PL has become a widely accepted practice that is a standard part of the supply chain. Companies utilize 3PL services for a variety of reasons, such as the desire to reduce costs, access to wider services, improved customer service and on-time delivery of goods. While it may seem counterintuitive, utilizing a third party to handle certain aspects of the logistics process can often result in cost savings as well as increased speeds and higher service levels. It also allows companies to focus their efforts on their core competencies, freeing up resources for other areas.

The primary 3PL services offered include transportation, warehousing, freight forwarding, inventory management, customs brokerage, and order fulfillment. By contracting out these services, companies are able to reduce costs, improve asset utilization, streamline operations, and improve speed to market. Additionally, 3PL providers typically purchase specialized software that helps streamline the process by automating key components like inventory visibility, shipment tracking and reporting.

3PL has become an important part of the supply chain in the modern era. As companies become more aware of the cost and efficiency benefits that 3PL can provide, it is likely that the utilization of 3PL will continue to grow. This is doubly true for smaller companies that don’t have the resources to manage the logistics of their products on their own. In addition, with the various technological advancements over the past few years, 3PL is becoming more efficient and cost-effective, providing even greater advantages to companies that choose to take advantage of it.

Third party logistics (3PL) is the process of outsourcing logistics and supply chain functions of a business to an external logistic and supply chain service provider. It is an industry that enables companies to focus on their core activities such as sales, marketing, product development and customer service, while an outside 3PL provider manages and executes quality supply chain activities. With the rapid globalization of business and companies striving for competitive advantage, it is becoming increasingly effective for companies to outsource their logistics operations.

3PL services include transportation and warehousing of goods, supply chain design, inventory and program management, freight audit/payment, distribution center operations, and more. 3PL providers may manage the goods directly or indirectly, providing services such as inbound planning, outbound shipping, full truckload and less than truckload transportation, freight forwarding, security, tracking and tracing, documentation, and reporting.

Third party logistics helps companies meet customer requirements better and faster, by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain. It also involves the development and implementation of logistics, transportation, inventory control, and warehousing systems in order to reduce costs and improve customer service. With the rising tide of globalization, 3PL services have become increasingly in demand as they are able to improve the speed, accuracy, efficiency and flexibility of supply chain operations. The integration of services and collaborative partnerships allow companies to reduce lead times, optimize total cost, increase customer satisfaction and improve inventory accuracy.

The 3PL services industry continues to experience significant growth in the past decade, due to increased complexity and globalization, the need for specialized logistics skills and the continuing trend of outsourced supply chains. The rise of e-commerce and global markets means that organizations can reach customers faster and easier. As a result, 3PLs are now considered a crucial part of any successful supply chain management strategy.
