关于莎士比亚

William Shakespeare was one of the worlds greatest playwrights, poets and actors. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in 1564, Shakespeare left school and moved to London at an early age to pursue an acting career. His outstanding talent as a playwright was evident early in his career, with his plays often described as timeless pieces of literature.

Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets as well as numerous other works. He was known for his works that blend intense characterisation, witty dialogue and passages of moving poetic language. His works were often built around complex and interesting characters, many of whom had to suffer in order to attain redemption and freedom.

The themes and characters in his plays reflect the diverse aspects of his own life and experiences. These works have gone on to become some of the most famous in the English language; from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, each of Shakespeare’s works continues to be a source of inspiration to readers across the globe.

Despite the fame and success of his works, Shakespeare was rarely recognised for them in his lifetime; instead, his acting saw him become a respected man in his field. He was popular not only for his plays, but also for his skilled mimicry; reportedly able to make any sound imaginable, his natural wit and humour earned him the respect of Londoners.

Shakespeare’s career ended in 1613, when he returned to Stratford and retired. He continued to write while tending to the publishing and theatre businesses of his children. It was only upon his death in 1616 that his works began to be widely known and admired across the world.

Shakespeare’s legacy is clear; his works have been adapted for film, television, theatre and other mediums and have been translated into more than 80 languages. In celebration of his works, 21 April is celebrated as ‘Shakespeare Day’, with events and activities held worldwide in honour of the bard. Many theatre companies and schools even produce stage versions of his plays to keep the legacy alive and inspire new generations.

It has been almost 400 years since Shakespeare’s death, but the impact that his works have had on the world has not diminished. Through his plays, poems and other works, the bard continues to inspire readers across the globe and influence theatre, literature, media and culture. His name will forever be synomous with England and remembered by generations to come.
