The European Unions Water Framework Directive (WFD) defines the concept of ecological quality very clearly in Article 16 of its Annex III: ”The ecological quality of a water body means the ability of that water body according to its accustomed characteristics to support and maintain good surface water-based ecosystems, their components, processes, functions and their structure and to creatively protect, preserve and enhance the quality of that water body in the long-term. ” The WFD is the first official document which established the concept of ecological quality as a measure of environmental sustainability.
