Installation of Rolling Bearings
Rolling bearings are important components of all kinds of machinery and equipment for transmitting, guiding, supporting and sustaining of forces. 1. Cleaning
Before installing the bearings, it is necessary to clean the bearings and housings thoroughly with kerosene or solvent-based cleaner, so as to remove any dirt and grease.
2. Bearing Housing
Bearing housing is one of the most important parts in the installation of bearing. An accurately dimensioned bearing housing with adequate adjustment of fit, is of paramount importance for the performance and durability of the bearings.
3. Lubricant
Selection of lubricant is critical for a successful and proper installation. The lubricants should be chosen according to the operation conditions, bearing type and material. Most rolling bearings are installed with grease.
4. Bearing fitting
When installing, the inner ring or outer ring of the bearing needs to be heated first to make the bearing easier to install and reduce the abrasion. Normally, oil bath heating method is used and the temperature should not exceed 250°C.
5. Set screw
Set screws should always be used to secure the bearing to the shaft or housing. The setscrews must be properly tightened to ensure that the bearing does not slip or rotate during operation.
6. Testing
Once the installation is completed, it is advisable to test the bearing to check its performance and whether the installation was done properly. It should be tested using a calibrated machine to measure its rotation speed, accuracy, friction and noise.
