Nocton Point - An Historical Gem

Nocton Point is a distinctive coastal feature located off the north east coast of England. The area has long been known for its historical and archaeological importance, dating back to prehistoric times. Its popularity among locals and tourists alike stems from the fact that it has been featured in literature, film, and television over the years, making it a popular destination. In fact, it was chosen as the location for the filming of the hit BBC drama Northern Lights.

Nocton Point has an incredibly rich and varied history, much of which has been recorded in the documents and manuscripts of the local area. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Point was inhabited during the Iron Age and was probably an important fortified outpost for the local inhabitants. By the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, it was well-known enough to be mentioned in the Domesday Book as Nuneton and since then, it has been inhabited off and on for nearly a thousand years.

During the Middle Ages, the importance of Nocton Point increased significantly. It was used as a base for fisherman, but was also a popular port for travelling merchants. The harbour provided access to numerous lucrative trading routes that went up to Scotland and even further afield.

The point was also an important landing spot for Vikings during their frequent raiding expeditions. Evidence suggests that these raids took place throughout the 11th and 12th centuries and it’s thought that the fortifications at Nocton Point served as a defensive point against their incursions.

In more recent times, Nocton Point has been less important but no less captivating. In the 19th century, the Point became a popular tourist destination due to its sweeping views of the coastline, its secluded beach and its ability to capture the imagination. It has inspired countless artists over the years from painters to photographers and, of course, the writer of the chilling novel Northern Lights.

Nocton Point continues to be a popular destination and is celebrated for its unique and beautiful landscape. Overlooking the North Sea, the Point is an idyllic area with an abundance of wildlife and birdlife providing an ideal spot for quiet contemplation. In fact, the Point has recently been declared a conservation area, ensuring its future is safeguarded.

Nocton Point is an historical gem that still holds an element of mystery and wonder even today. Whilst its long and fascinating past may no longer be visible on the surface, its influence is still felt in the local area and beyond.
