Systems Theory
Systems theory is a way of looking at the way systems interact with their environments and the various elements that make up a system. Cybernetics is another sub-discipline of systems theory, and it seeks to understand how systems interact with their environment and how their behavior is affected by the environment. Information Theory is a branch of systems theory that studies communication within a system and how it affects the system’s behavior. System Dynamics focuses on nonlinear interactions between elements within a system, as well as how an input affects the output of a system over time. Systems Thinking is a approach that examines the behavior of a system as a whole, rather than its individual components. Finally, Soft Systems Methodology is an approach to analyzing complex systems that focuses on flexibility, problem solving, and change.
Systems theory is an important field of study, as it can be applied to a wide range of systems. Many of the world’s most complex problems can only be understood by applying a systems approach, so it is important for those with an interest in systems to understand the basics of systems theory.
