Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest composers in history. Born in Germany in 1770, he was a prodigy whose genius was recognized early on, and he created some of the most iconic pieces of classical music. Beethoven was profoundly deaf by his late twenties, forcing him to communicate exclusively through writing. Although this created additional obstacles for his musical pursuits, it did not stop him from becoming a phenomenal composer.

Beethoven wrote in various musical genres and created some of the most iconic pieces of classical music ever composed. From his opera Fidelio to his 9th Symphony, each of his works are known for their exceptional beauty, complexity and emotive power. Beethoven also wrote three piano concertos and several piano sonatas which remain some of the most difficult and technically challenging pieces to master.

Other compositions of note include his famous “Für Elise”, the “Moonlight Sonata”, the Violin Sonata in G Major, the string quartets and his timeless “Ode to Joy”. Furthermore, Beethoven was also known for his innovative use of form and structure in his compositions.

But beyond the immense talent of his music, Ludwig van Beethoven’s life was filled with tragedy. He was deeply affected by the death of his beloved mother at the age of 15, and further by the passing of his two brothers two years later. Beethoven’s father was an alcoholic who treated him and his siblings tragically. He was indifferent to Beethoven’s achievement abroad and sought to control him.

Beethoven acknowledged his lack of family in his later compositions and wrote letters to his friends and acquaintances expressing his care for them and his need for companionship. As additional heartache for Beethoven, he was unable to fulfill his ambition to marry his true love, the Countess Julie von Waldstein, as she was secretly engaged to someone else. This ultimately led to Beethoven retreating from human company and finding solace in his music.

Beethoven’s life and music continued to evolve and affect people far beyond his death in 1827. His work still enables people around the world to experience incredible emotion in a way that sets him apart as one of the greatest musical minds of all time. The legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven will continue to enlighten and entertain audiences the world over.
