Chromium plating is one of the most commonly used metal finishing processes. It provides an electroplated layer of chromium on steel, stainless steel or aluminum, which enhances the look and lifespan of the part. The chromium plating process requires an electrolyte solution, usually an alkaline solution of chromic acid, through which an electrical current is passed to attract chromium ions onto the parts surface.

Chromium plating is often used in many consumer and industrial applications because of its superior corrosion resistance and sleek, highly polished finish. In consumer applications, its often used on items such as faucets, automobile components, and plumbing supplies, while in industrial applications it finds uses in aerospace, military, medical equipment and other areas. Chromium plating also offers decreased friction and wear on the surfaces of the part, which improves its durability and enhances its performance.

There are a few different types of chromium plating that are commonly used in various applications: decorative, electroplated, and hard chromium. Decorative chromium plating is most often used for aesthetic purposes, to provide a part with a shiny, attractive finish. In this process, a thin layer of chromium is electroplated onto the part’s surface, offering protection from corrosion and enhancing the part’s appearance.

Electroplated chromium is usually a thicker deposition of chromium than decorative plating. While this type of chromium plating offers superior protection and performance, it is also the most costly and time consuming method of chromium plating.
