JIS G 4107 (High Temperature Alloy Steel Bolts) is an international standard for the specification of mechanical properties and physical requirements for high temperature alloy steel bolts. It defines the chemical composition, hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and other mechanical and physical requirements for heat treated bolts. The standard is applicable for bolts of sizes from M6 to M36.

The general composition of high temperature alloy steel bolts is carbon steels with varying amounts of elements such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Many of these elements increase the strength and modulus of the bolts and therefore their high temperature performance. In addition to increasing mechanical performance, alloy elements also provide protection against chemical attack. By increasing the chromium and nickel contents, the chemical resistance of the bolts is increased.

Heat-treatment of high temperature alloy steel bolts is an important step in ensuring their strength and reliability. Heat-treatment is the process of heating steel to the exact temperature and time needed to impart desired properties in the material. Heat-treatment of these bolts is done to relieve strain in the steel, improve machinability and toughness, improve spheroidization of the steel, refine grain and restore the original chemistry. This heat-treatment allows for superior strength and corrosion resistance of the high temperature alloy steel bolts.

High temperature alloy steel bolts comply with certain physical requirements as defined by the standard. The size of the bolts must meet certain requirements and many temporal products are used to determine the head width, thread length, thread length, thread diameter and other properties. The surface finish of the bolts must also meet a certain level as defined by the standard. For heat treated bolts, the standard also specifies the Rockwell and Brinell hardness and charpy impact energy requirements.

When procuring high temperature alloy steel bolts, it is important to ensure that the bolts conform to the standard. The standard defines the mechanical and physical requirements for the bolts and therefore, non-conforming bolts may not perform the same at high temperature. Therefore, it is important to obtain and inspect the certificate of compliance from the bolt manufacturer.

In conclusion, JIS G 4107 is an international standard for high temperature alloy steel bolts. It is important to ensure that all bolts conform to the standard defined in the standard to ensure safe and reliable performance at high temperatures. The certificate of compliance from the manufacturer should be obtained and inspected to ensure that the bolts conform to the requirements of the standard.

JIS G 4107-1994, High Temperature Alloy Steel Bolting Material, specifies the materials, classifications, chemical compositions, mechanical properties and heat treatment requirements for high temperature alloy steel bolting materials used for the manufacture of bolts for high temperature service.

This standard covers thechemical composition, mechanical properties, and heat treatment requirements for high temperature alloy steel bolting materials in accordance with the requirements of five different grades specified in Table 1.

Table 1 specifies the different grades of high temperature alloy steel bolts based on chemical composition requirements, mechanical requirements and heat treatment requirements. Grade 1 is the base grade material and it has the lowest mechanical properties of the five grades while grade 5 is the highest grade material with the greatest mechanical properties.

Grade 1 material has the least demanding requirements of the five grades with regard to both chemical composition and mechanical properties. Grade 2 material has slightly higher chemical composition requirements and mechanical properties than the grade 1 material. Grade 3, 4, and 5material have the highest heat treatment requirements and their mechanical properties must meet or exceed the requirements of the lesser grade bolting materials.

The mechanical requirements specify the minimum ranges of tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation for bolt in a standard length configuration and also for shorter bolt lengths. The chemical compositions require specific contents of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and 0.50 percent chromium and 0.50 percent nickel for all grades of bolts.

This standard ensures that proper material and heat treatment requirements for high temperature alloy steel bolting materials are maintained in order to provide a high strength, reliable product used for bolting applications at high temperatures.
