Cold bending edge grooved steel is a cold-formed steel produced by a process of edge grooving and bending. It is mainly used in steel structures in the construction and engineering industries. Industrial production of cold-bending edge grooved steel consists of several processes such as the shaping of grooves, the actual bending of the ribbon, and the cutting and finishing of the resulting product. The raw steel is cut into strips of appropriate width, usually between 20 and 30 mm, and the edges are edge grooved by various machining procedures. The strips are then bent in a cold state, usually in a radius of R ≥ 3 × t (t is the ribbon thickness) and sometimes with the help of a heated upper die or a roller, to the desired shape and dimensions. After bending, the ends of the strip are cut off and the edges smoothed for the final product. Cold-bent edge grooved steel usually has a large bending radius, which helps to increase the working strength of the structure and reduce the weight. Its C-shaped, Z-shaped and S-shaped configurations can be made to most specifications, and its cross sections can be adjusted to fit a wide range of structural needs. Its superior forming and welding performance also gives it an edge over traditional steel structures, making it a more cost-effective solution. GB 6723-86 is a standard for cold-bending edge grooved steel in China, which stipulates the technical requirements and inspection requirements for the production and use of cold-bending edge grooved steel. Its main provisions include cold-bending edge grooved steel classification and code, orders, size, shape and tolerance, test methods, inspection rules and marks. This standard has been repeatedly revised since its implementation in 1986, and the latest version was revised in May 2017. It is mainly used for cold-bending edge grooving and bending of thin steel strips, and its purpose is to ensure the common usage of cold-bending edge grooved steels.
