Weldability of Low Chrome Ferritic Stainless Steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405)
Low chrome ferritic stainless steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405) is a duplex stainless steel with a balance of austenitic and ferritic structures. It is mostly used in automobile parts and building materials. It has superior corrosion resistance due to its good high temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
Welding of Low Chrome Ferritic Stainless Steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405) is possible due to its ferritic and austenitic structures. It can be welded using TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding and shielded metal arc welding. It is important to note that the welding of this steel should not be done too quickly because it has a tendency to overheat, causing cracks and porosity.
When welding Low Chrome Ferritic Stainless Steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405), several important factors should be taken into consideration. The device should be a clean welding device and the welding environment should be clear and free of oil, grease and other kinds of dirt. It is also very important to monitor the temperature of the metal throughout the welding process, this can be done using a temperature control device.
Furthermore, preheating of the metal is also necessary as it helps to reduce stresses and prevent cracking and distortion of the welded portion. The preheating temperature should be lower than the uppermost limit of the metals alloying elements. Common preheating techniques used when welding Low Chrome Ferritic Stainless Steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405) include the use of a furnace, a halogen torch and a resistance heater.
The filler metal used when welding Low Chrome Ferritic Stainless Steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405) should also be chosen carefully. Depending on the grade of the metal, various filler metals can be used such as 304 stainless steel, 308 stainless steel and even cast iron, this should be chosen after consideration of the type of welding technique and the welding position.
Finally, a suitable post-welding treatment should also be carried out on the welded area.It should involve cooling and then heat treatment at a suitable temperature for Lp (Low Plane Stress) Welds. This process helps to reduce the stresses on the welded portion and also ensure that it retains its corrosion resistance.
In conclusion, Welding of Low Chrome Ferritic Stainless Steel 0Cr13Al (AISI405) is possible, and with the right technique, preparation and post welding treatment it can be highly successful. It is important to note that due to the ferritic and austenitic structures of this steel, it is prone to overheating and thus requires a slower welding speed. In addition it is imperative that preheating be done, a suitable filler metal be chosen, and a post welding treatment be done for the best results.
