Mechanical Parts: Vocabulary Cheat Sheet
Screw: A mechanical fastener consisting of a helical ridge, or thread, that is inserted into a hole, or on a post.
Bolt: A type of fastener consisting of a threaded rod or shaft held with a nut.
Washer: A thin platform or ring with a central hole and usually protected against corrosion, used to spread the pressure around a fastener or joint.
Nut: A type of fastener that uses a bolt or a shaft with a threaded opening on one side.
Stud: A threaded bar or rod used in a fastening assembly to join two parts together.
Grip: A part of a fastening assembly which provides a secure hold on a fastening surface.
Clamp: A clamp is a fastening device used to hold two or more objects together.
Anchor: A type of fastening device that is used to secure a part to a surface such as a wall.
Spring: A coil of metal or plastic which is usually used to provide a return force or tension.
Gasket: A sealing device used to fill the space between two surfaces in order to prevent the leakage of fluids or gases.
Cam: A device used to convert rotary motion into straight-line motion or vice versa.
Clevis: A fastening device that accepts a pin, or bolt, and is used to attach two components together.
Coupling: A mechanical device that is used to connect two shafts, allowing them to transmit power in the same direction.
Fastener: A device used to join two objects, typically two pieces of material, together.
Bracket: A structural component that is used to support and/or reinforce other parts or components.
Hold-down: A type of fastening device that is used to secure an object in place.
Joint: An interface between two parts which can provide support and allow rotation, swiveling, or connection.
Retaining Ring: A fastening device used to retain an object such as a bearing, bushing, or the like.
Linkage: A connecting mechanism that is used to transmit motion, force, or energy between two shafts or components.
Pulley: A device used to change the direction of a force or to support a load.
Pin: A short rod or cylinder, usually made of metal, that is used to join two objects.
Washer: A flat metal or other material disk with a central hole, used to distribute the pressure exerted by a fastener.
Shaft: A rotating mechanical part that is used to transfer power and torque.
Axle: A shaft or bar which connects two wheels, allowing them to rotate in the same direction.
Rivet: A fastening device consisting of a pin that is inserted into a hole and then expanded to secure two pieces of material together.
Roller Bearing: A bearing that consists of inner and outer races and rolling elements that allow two surfaces to move relative to one another in a smooth, friction-free manner.
Lever: An element which is used to create a mechanical advantage by amplifying a force or producing rotational motion.
Toggle: A device consisting of an arm that pivots around a central point, used to connect two objects.
Knob: A round handle or control used to turn or adjust something.
Gear: A rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part to transmit motion or to change speed or direction.
Clip: A device used to fasten one object to another.
Strap: A broad band or ribbon of fabric or leather used to fasten, secure, or carry an object.
Connector: A piece of hardware that is used to join two or more parts together.
