Diamond: The Miracle of Life

Diamonds begin their journey deep within the earth, formed by heat and pressure over millions of years in its depths. They are created mostly in the earth’s mantle, an area between 200 and 300 miles below the surface. When these diamonds are squeezed up to the earth’s surface, they are brought up with other materials on volcanic eruptions. These eruptions create Kimberlite and lamprophyre pipes, which are the sites of most diamond mining.
Once the diamond has been unearthed, it is cut and polished to bring out its unique beauty. The cutting process is a highly specialized skill and includes many sophisticated modern techniques using lasers and computers. As they’re polished and shaped, these sparkly gems are assigned a grade, based on their color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Grading determines the value and marketability of each diamond.
Once graded, the diamond can be set, usually in precious metal alloys like gold, silver or platinum. Its new setting is designed to enhance the diamond’s natural beauty, and may include a variety of cuts and shapes. Setting the diamond also adds to its value and helps to protect it from damage.
After this step, the diamond can be purchased and added to a family’s heirlooms and possessions, to be valued and enjoyed for generations.
